Video review: Risky overlapping attacking

Here’s a drill – or rather a combination of drills – that’s an injury waiting to happen.

Don’t get me wrong. I think there are some quite good elements here.

  • Passing off a live serve
  • Setting off a live pass
  • Transition from pass to attack
  • Hitting against a block.
  • Defense around a block

I just don’t know why the serve and the setter hit at the libero have to happen basically at the same time.

Yes, it keeps people active.

Surely, though, you could stagger things a bit to avoid one defender having balls hit at her in rapid sequence from very different points on the net – with limited or no ability to read the second one. And rule out the risk of passer/libero collisions.

You’d probably need to have someone other than the setter hitting the ball at the libero in that case.

Also, what’s the focus for the MB? Do they only block on the ball from the Setter? If so, then the OH doesn’t get the decidedly more likely scenario of facing a double block when attacking an out-of-system ball. Maybe you could use two MBs?
