Drill: Live set downball butterfly

volleyball butterfly drills

Synopsis: This is a butterfly variation based on downballs that could be a useful warm-up activity for teams with good ball control.

Age/Skill Level: This is a drill for intermediate and higher levels.

Requirements: 8 players, balls, a full court

Execution: Set up the players with players on each side in 1 and 5, as well as players at the net in 3. The remaining players split up on either side and line up behind ones in 1.

As you can see in the video below, the player in 1 hits a downball over the net to the player in 5. They pass to the player in 3, who sets the ball to the player on their side in 1 for them to send a downball over. The idea is to sustain a continuous rally with both balls.

Variations:

  • With more advanced groups you could make the downball an easy jump attack.

Additional Comments:

  • To keep things flowing it would be ideal to have someone ready to bowl a ball over if the downball fails.
