I previously reviewed the book Great Teams: 16 Things High Performing Organizations Do Differently. Here’s a quote from the book that caught my attention.

High-performing organizations have visionary, engaging road maps. These tools go beyond simple mission statements; they are active, clear, and actionable objectives that lead to success. All employees understand the important components, know their places within the road map, and can take defined steps each day to achieve greatness together within their organizations.

Here’s my question.

Does everyone in your program know the vision, the road map, and how they contribute to moving things forward?

This is definitely something to have in mind if you’re in a program building situation. By that I mean you have longer term objectives beyond this season.

But you shouldn’t ignore it if, for example, you’re just coaching a Juniors team for this current season. Presumably, you still have some kind of vision for where you want that team to end the year. You do, right? If not, you should figure it out. After all, it’s hard to get anywhere if you don’t know where you’re going.

Anyway, I like the second sentence from the quote. We are sports coaches. Action is a feature of our work, so it makes sense that it’s also a feature of our vision and road map. It also helps us engage everyone in pursuit of the joint objective.
